The sunrise day, hour by hour

Sit-in guests stay with the jeep at the viewpoint. Tracking guests walk the last stretch to the viewpoint with a guide, on dirt and loose stones. The rim is often about 12–18°C before dawn, so bring a warm layer.
The sunset day
- Hotel pickup at 14:30–15:30. WhatsApp names the minute for your hotel.
- The rim viewpoint for sunset around 18:00, and the black lava field.
- The sit-down meal, then the same jeep back.
- About 4–5 hours door to door, at the same rates as sunrise.
Does the jeep go to the summit?
No. Jeeps drive to viewpoints on the caldera rim and onto the lava field. The summit of Mount Batur is reached on foot, on a two-hour sandy climb in the dark from near Toya Bungkah. That is the sunrise trek, from $103 for one hiker, $56 each for two, and $48 each for three or more.
Is the Mount Batur jeep worth it?
- Worth it if you want the caldera light without a two-hour climb, or you travel with children or bad knees.
- Worth it if you want photos on the black lava field. The trek does not include that stop.
- Worth it if you want the sunset, with an afternoon pickup instead of a 02:00 alarm.
- Choose the trek instead if standing on the summit is the point of the morning.
