What to wear on the Mount Batur jeep: cold, clouds, and shoes

How cold it is at the rim

Ubud mornings are warm. The Penelokan rim is around 1,400 metres up, and in the hour before sunrise it is often about 12–18°C. Wind off the caldera makes it feel colder, and you stand still while the sky changes. Guests who arrive in a singlet and shorts spend the best light wrapped in the jeep. On the sunset run the air is milder in the afternoon, then cools fast after the sun goes down.

What to wear and bring

• A warm jacket, fleece, or hoodie. A light rain shell on top in the wet months.
• Long trousers. Shorts are fine for the drive down, not for the rim at dawn.
• Closed shoes: trainers or walking shoes. The lava field is sharp and uneven.
• A hat or scarf if you feel the cold.
• Sunglasses and sunscreen for the lava field after sunrise.
• Swimwear and a towel only if you add the hot spring.

Sit-in or tracking: shoes matter more on one

Sit-in guests stay with the jeep at the viewpoint, so any closed shoe is fine. Tracking guests walk the last stretch to the viewpoint with a guide, on dirt and loose stones. For tracking, wear trainers with grip and bring a small torch or use your phone light before dawn. Neither option is the summit trek. That is a separate two-hour climb.

Clouds and the best months

Batur views depend on cloud. April to October, the dry season, usually has the clearest mornings over Lake Batur and Mount Agung. November to March brings more cloud and rain, and some mornings the rim is inside the cloud. The lava field and the meal still happen. If the view matters most, aim for the dry season.

Both runs cost the same. Tracking jeep: $54 each for two, $45 each for three or more. Sit-in jeep: $69 each for two, $57 each for three or more. Hotel pickup from Ubud is included. The natural hot spring is $9 (Rp 148.500) per person extra, entrance included.
