What the route is

The black lava field sits on the floor and shoulders of the Batur caldera, north of the rim road most tourists use. Our area pin is about -8.230, 115.365. You ride sand, ridges, and short village connectors with a guide who can see how tired the group is. Lunch is a warung you pay for yourself.

The bike in the package

A 250cc enduro with knobby tyres, in the class of a KTM EXC. It is tall. If you cannot flat-foot at least one side, say so before we take the money — we will move you to the Tabanan 150 or the scooter-style bike, or we will decline the day.

Bring ankle-covering shoes, long pants, and a layer. The rim is cooler than Seminyak, and lava dust gets into everything.

Rain and the sand

A shower overnight makes the lava sand denser and easier to steer. A long dry spell makes it deeper and slower. When you name a date we look at the week and tell you if the guide wants to move it. That advice is part of the booking, not a surprise on the morning.
