Gitgit canyoning guide: ropes, measurements, and the drive

Where the gorge is

Gitgit waterfall is the landmark you can point to on a map, near -8.1895, 115.1365, in Buleleng. The drive from Ubud is 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in ordinary traffic, longer from Canggu or Nusa Dua. The canyoning line is a guided descent in that wet highland country. Standing at the public viewpoint is not the activity.

Water level chooses the pitches. After heavy rain a drop may close. The guide reads it the morning of the trip and will move the group to the open line or move the date. That is a safety call, and the written quote says how a weather move is handled.

What the descent involves

• A helmet and a harness, checked against the sizes you sent.
• Walking and swimming between pitches.
• Rappels where the rock needs a rope.
• Slides on smooth rock the guide has walked.
• Jumps only into pools checked that morning. The rope is always the alternative.

You will be fully wet. Closed shoes that can be ruined are better than a new pair you care about. A change of clothes for the car is not optional.

Send measurements first

Every guest: age, height in centimetres, weight in kilograms, shoe size. Harnesses and any neoprene top are packed from that list. A shoulder that cannot lift overhead, a recent knee surgery, or pregnancy belongs in the same note. We would rather decline the day than discover the limit at the trailhead.

Minimum age on the standard line is 12. Some pitches need older guests. The measurements decide it, not a slogan.
